SAFARI MERZOUGA (5-Day Itinerary)
Overview
Safari Merzouga is a sample five-day itinerary that combines just a few of the many experiences available in the Moroccan Sahara Desert. Thanks to Ali’s extensive knowledge of the region, this tour offers a unique opportunity to discover the beauty of the desert and the traditions of its nomadic people.
However, this is not simply one itinerary. Instead, it can be adapted into several different experiences depending on your interests, travel style, and available time. Therefore, whether you wish to spend a few days or a longer period exploring the Sahara, this journey provides endless possibilities.
Moreover, you will have the chance to discover breathtaking landscapes, meet local communities, and experience life in harmony with nature. Along the way, you will also enjoy unforgettable camel rides, stunning sunsets, and magical nights beneath the stars.
Trip Description
Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Gorge
After breakfast, we will meet you at your accommodation in Marrakech and begin our journey towards the High Atlas Mountains. We will travel through the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass, which reaches an altitude of 2,260 meters above sea level.
As we climb through the mountains, you will pass picturesque Berber villages, refreshing waterfalls, and ever-changing landscapes. Furthermore, there will be opportunities to stop along the way and admire the spectacular scenery.
We will then pause for a refreshing glass of mint tea before continuing to the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, where we will arrive in time for lunch. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has served as the backdrop for numerous films, including Gladiator, Babel, Lawrence of Arabia, and Kingdom of Heaven.
Afterward, we will continue to Ouarzazate, where you can visit the Taourirt Kasbah and the Atlas Film Studios, the largest film studios in Africa. Subsequently, we will travel through the Valley of Roses and the Dades Valley before reaching the Dades Gorge in time for sunset.
Finally, you will enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in a traditional and charming hotel.

Day 2: Dades Gorge – Todra Gorge – Merzouga
After breakfast, you may take a relaxing walk through the Dades Gorge. Subsequently, we will continue along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through Tinghir and its historic Jewish Quarter.
Around midday, we will arrive at the spectacular Todra Gorge, where you can enjoy lunch and explore the impressive canyon walls on foot. Afterward, we will continue our journey toward Merzouga, passing through Erfoud along the way.
Upon arrival in Merzouga before sunset, we will leave the vehicle at a hotel and begin a memorable camel trek into the magnificent Erg Chebbi dunes.
As the sun sets over the desert, you will reach a traditional Berber camp. There, you will enjoy dinner accompanied by traditional music, drums, and songs performed by Berber and Tuareg musicians.
Meanwhile, the desert sky will reveal millions of stars. If conditions are favorable, you may even see the Milky Way stretching across the horizon.

Day 3: Merzouga – Nomads – Khamlia – Merzouga
After breakfast, you can relax by the hotel swimming pool before beginning an exciting desert excursion by 4×4 vehicle.
During this tour, you will discover the diverse landscapes of the Sahara, including golden dunes, black volcanic rocks, hidden oases, and seasonal desert lakes. In addition, you will visit the village of Khamlia, famous for its traditional Gnawa music.
There, you will have the opportunity to listen to authentic Saharan rhythms and learn about the local culture. Furthermore, you will visit a nomadic Berber family and enjoy traditional mint tea in their tent.
The excursion also follows part of the historic Paris-Dakar Rally route. Later, we will stop at a fossil site where local craftsmen extract and prepare fossils from ancient rock formations.
In the afternoon, we will return to the hotel. You may relax by the pool, enjoy dinner, and listen to local music. Alternatively, you can take a peaceful walk through the dunes and admire the stars in complete silence.

Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani – Nkob – Agdz
Early in the morning, we will wake up to witness one of the most beautiful moments in the Sahara: sunrise over the dunes.
Afterward, you may climb the dunes for panoramic views before riding the camels back to the hotel. Following breakfast and some time to freshen up, we will begin our journey toward Agdz.
First, we will stop in Rissani, home to one of the most traditional and important markets in Morocco. Here, you can explore the bustling souk and experience authentic local life.
We will then continue through the magnificent Draa Valley, which is renowned for its endless palm groves and stunning desert scenery.
By late afternoon, we will arrive in Agdz, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the oasis town.

Day 5: Agdz – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech
After breakfast, we will begin the final day of our adventure.
Leaving behind the deserts, palm groves, valleys, and oases, we will travel back toward Marrakech through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains. However, before crossing the mountains, we will stop once again at Ait Ben Haddou.
There, you will have time to explore the ancient fortified village and learn about its fascinating history. Moreover, you will discover why this remarkable site has appeared in many famous films and television productions.
After the visit, we will continue through the Atlas Mountains while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.
Finally, we will descend toward the plains and arrive in Marrakech, where your unforgettable Sahara adventure comes to an end.
